The short version.
60-second readLight rain: yes, with care. A properly sealed scooter handles wet streets; the real risk is grip and braking distance, which roughly doubles on wet ground. Slow down, brake early, avoid painted lines and metal covers. Standing water and storms: no. Heat: the scooter copes better than you do - batteries self-protect above ~45°C, so shade, water and slower riding matter more for the rider than the machine.
Wet streets, honest physics.
Grip is the storyPeople worry about the electronics. That is the wrong worry: a well-built scooter’s deck, battery case and connectors are sealed against splash and spray, and every Elyra is tested for exactly that before it joins the fleet. Rain does not get into a healthy scooter. What rain changes is the ground.
- Braking distance roughly doubles. If you normally stop in four metres, plan on eight. Brake earlier and softer - grabbing a fistful of brake on wet ground is how wheels lock.
- The slipperiest surfaces are the painted ones. Zebra stripes, lane arrows, metal drain covers, polished stone thresholds. Cross them upright and straight, never mid-turn.
- The first minutes of rain are the worst. Fresh rain floats months of dust and oil off the surface before washing it away. A street that has rained for an hour grips better than one that started five minutes ago.
- Visibility is your job twice over. Seeing, and being seen. Lights help; so does riding where drivers already look.
And one honest boundary: standing water deep enough to hide the road surface is a no. You cannot brake on what you cannot see.
The 40°C afternoon.
Chergui daysHeat is Morocco’s real weather question, and the answer splits in two.
The machine: lithium cells dislike extreme heat. Above roughly 45°C internal temperature a battery management system begins protecting itself - charging slows or pauses, and sustained full power is trimmed. This is by design and reversible. What genuinely ages a battery is being charged while hot, which is an operator problem, not a rider one: our batteries charge indoors, in a cooled room, never in the sun.
The rider: on a chergui afternoon the human is the component nearest its limits. The scooter’s advantage is that it turns a 20-minute walk across sun-baked ground into a 4-minute ride with moving air. Ride early or late when you can, drink before you feel thirsty, and let the parking hubs’ shade do its work.
The Weather Derating Clock.
Fleet-side weatherWeather should be a fleet setting, not a rider decision. The Elyra fleet retunes itself to conditions on a rolling clock: wet-ground hours cap top speed and soften acceleration curves fleet-wide; extreme-heat hours raise every scooter’s battery reserve and shift charging to the cool of the night; storm hours pause unlocks entirely. Riders never configure anything - the scooter you unlock is already tuned to the sky above it.
The principle behind it: a rule that depends on every rider’s judgement protects almost nobody, because judgement varies. A rule the fleet applies uniformly protects everyone, including the rider who never read this article. It is the same philosophy as our speed caps - move safety from willpower to firmware.
Riders also ask.
Straight answersWill rain damage an electric scooter?
Not a healthy, well-sealed one. Deck, battery case and connectors on fleet scooters are sealed against splash and spray and tested for it. The real rain risk is grip: braking distance roughly doubles on wet ground, so slow down and brake early. Avoid standing water deep enough to hide the road surface.
Can I ride an Elyra during rain?
Yes, in light to moderate rain. The fleet automatically enters a wet-weather mode that caps top speed and softens acceleration. In storms or flooding, unlocks pause until conditions pass - if the app lets you unlock, the fleet considers it rideable.
Is it safe to ride in 40°C heat?
For the scooter, yes - batteries self-protect and our charging happens indoors in cooled rooms. For the rider, heat is the bigger risk: ride early or late when possible, hydrate, and remember the ride itself is far cooler than the same trip walked.
Why is my scooter slower today?
Most likely the fleet is in a weather-derated state - wet ground or extreme heat trims top speed and acceleration fleet-wide. It is deliberate, temporary, and the same for everyone riding that day.
What surfaces are most slippery when wet?
Painted road markings, metal drain and utility covers, polished stone, and smooth concrete thresholds. Cross them upright and in a straight line, never while turning or braking.
