The short version.
60-second readYes. A helmet is legally required= on motorised scooters in Morocco, and the physics back the law: in a fall your head arrives at the ground carrying your full riding speed, from standing height, with nothing to absorb the hit but bone - or foam. Head injury is the outcome that turns a scraped knee into a changed life, and it is the one a helmet is built to prevent. Every Elyra carries a sanitised helmet, included with the ride.
“Slow” is a lie.
What a fall really isTwenty km/h sounds gentle - a brisk cyclist, a fast jog. The deception is that in a fall, speed is only half of what your head brings to the ground. The other half is height: a standing rider’s head starts around 1.7 metres up, and gravity spends the whole fall adding to whatever forward speed you carried.
Put together, a simple tip-over at riding speed delivers an impact in the range of a head-first drop from well over a metre onto concrete - concentrated on whichever few square centimetres of skull land first. Hands and shoulders take most scooter falls; the helmet exists for the minority of falls they miss, because that minority is where the life-changing outcomes live.
A helmet works exactly once per impact: its foam liner crushes to stretch the collision over milliseconds more time, cutting the peak force your brain sees. That is also why a helmet that has taken a real hit is finished - the crush is spent - and why fleet helmets that log an impact are pulled and replaced.
Fit, in thirty seconds.
Three checks- Level. The helmet sits flat, two fingers above the eyebrows - not tipped back like a hat. A tipped helmet protects the wrong part of the fall.
- Snug. Shake your head; the shell should follow without sliding. If it wobbles, tighten the dial at the back until it doesn’t.
- Strapped. Two fingers fit between strap and chin - no more, no less. An unclipped helmet leaves the scene at the exact moment it was hired for.
That is the whole ritual. Done daily it takes less time than unlocking the scooter.
The Helmet Handshake.
Default, not exceptionThe ride begins when the helmet clips. Every Elyra carries a helmet in its bin. Unlock in the app, take the helmet, close the clip - the fastener’s sensor completes the unlock and the motor wakes. Return it to the bin at ride’s end. Helmets are swapped and UV-sanitised on the same nightly rounds as the batteries, and any helmet whose sensors log an impact is retired on the spot.
Helmet campaigns fail for one boring reason: the helmet isn’t there at the moment of the ride. Nobody carries one to maybe-ride a scooter they haven’t found yet. Putting the helmet on the vehicle - and making it part of the unlock instead of a nag screen - moves it from virtue to default. Our riders’ helmet rate isn’t a statistic we campaign for; it is a property of the system.

Straight answersIs a helmet mandatory on electric scooters in Morocco?
Yes. The rules for motorised personal mobility vehicles require a fastened helmet, on shared and private scooters alike. On Elyra the helmet is supplied with the vehicle and fastening it is part of the unlock.
Are shared helmets hygienic?
Elyra helmets are swapped and UV-sanitised on the nightly service rounds, and every helmet carries a removable, washed liner. If a helmet is missing or you’d rather not use one, clip in your own - any certified helmet completes the handshake.
Can I use my own helmet?
Yes, and many daily riders do. Bring any certified helmet, clip it, and ride - the bin helmet stays put and the handshake completes the same way.
Do helmets expire?
Foam liners age: replace a daily-use helmet roughly every three years, and immediately after any real impact - the protective crush is single-use even when the shell looks fine. Fleet helmets log impacts and are retired automatically.
Why do slow falls still cause head injuries?
Because falling height adds to riding speed. A rider’s head starts about 1.7 metres up, so even a low-speed tip-over can strike the ground hard, concentrated on a small area of skull. The helmet’s crushable liner spreads that impact over more time and area.
